January 16, 2018 – San Antonio Express News, Newspaper Interview DACA recipients get temporary reprieve but are left with an uncertain future. The cancelation of the DACA program exposed Dreamers to losing their jobs and facing deportation. However, a federal judge ordered USCIS to continue to renew DACA work permits. The judge’s order will be appealed making it unclear how long the court’s order will remain in place, but in the meantime DACA work permits can be renewed. Attorney Gerardo Menchaca, who was interviewed for this story, outlined the timeline of the DACA work permit renewal. |

Attorney Gerardo Menchaca delivered remarks urging Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to adopt policies to prevent Border Patrol from detaining people in ambulances who need emergency medical care. |

October 26, 2017 – News 4 WOAI, Digital News Interview Border Patrol detains 10-year old girl with cerebral palsy after surgery. A 10-year old undocumented immigrant, is detained by Border Patrol agents, while in an ambulance in route to a hospital for an emergency surgery. Agents allowed the girl to pass the checkpoint but followed her to the hospital over 100 miles away. After surgery, the girl was taken into detention. This case highlights that undocumented immigrants must often choose between emergency health care and being detained. Lawyer Gerardo Menchaca was interviewed to comment on the developing story. |

DACA recipients were apparently detained due to confusion over changes in policy (the announcement of the future cancelation of the DACA program). Lawyer Gerardo Menchaca explained the DACA application process and the validity of the DACA authorization cards for this interview. |

Many undocumented immigrants, including women and children, lose their lives in their desperate attempt to come work in the USA. Pursuit of the American dream and a lack of temporary work visas under our current immigration laws, cause thousands of immigrants to risk their lives to reach American soil. US companies offer many low-pay, low-skill jobs that most Americans do not want, but immigrants do want these jobs. To save lives and to fill these job openings, Congress should create a sensible workable temporary worker program. Only a change in our immigration system will prevent further deaths. |

Senate bill would shift immigration to a merit-based system. The President and Senate Republicans proposed a new immigration system designed to cut legal immigration in half. The proposed law, known as the RAISE Act, would qualify would-be immigrants based on a point system. It also would eliminate a US Citizen’s right to immigrate parents and siblings. November 21, 2014 – San Antonio Express News, Newspaper Interview Immigrants here study their new legal path. President Obama issued an immigration executive order that (1) expands the DACA program for young people who were not previously covered, (2) grants undocumented parents of US Citizens, who have lived in the USA for at least 5 years, a chance at a work permit and a 3-year no deportation period, and (3) provides work permits to spouses of high skilled workers who are waiting on their Green Cards. Lawyer Gerardo Menchaca explained the type of evidence some of his immigration clients have used to prove they qualify for the DACA program. |

Undocumented students look to imperiled measure. The original Dream Act, proposed in 2001, is in danger of dying at the hands of Congress. This proposed law would provide a path to Permanent Residency for young immigrants who go to college or join the military. It applies to people under 16 years old who have been in the USA for 5 years or more, and who within 6 years of completing high school, have a clean criminal record, have completed 2 years of college or served in the military. Attorney Gerardo Menchaca was interviewed for this story and commented on the problems that the proposed Dream Act would solve for would be Dreamers. |
